I thought that it was a great idea, and since then created several frames to display my minifigures. I never fully documented the process I use and thought that the holiday season break would be a good time to do so. This article shows you my way of doing it. There are several other ways to display the minifigures in IKEA frames. However, I always liked the 6 rows approach. I feel that it is much less cluttered.
